Uh oh, looks like you mis-typed something.
When you start missing updates in your timeline, something's gone wrong with your cache. By following and unfollowing someone, your cache is refreshed and the problem is temporarily fixed (see the thread on Satisfaction for more information). All this does is automate that process.
